Benedek Devich
Benedek Devich is a Hungarian double bassist and one of the most outstanding talents of the young Hungarian musician generation.Born into a musical family—his father is a clarinettist, his mother a cellist, and his grandfather was a violinist in the Bartók String Quartet—he began playing the violin at the age of six before later choosing the double bass as his instrument.
He commenced his studies at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in the Special Class for Exceptional Young Talents, where his mentors were Zsolt Fejérvári and Rita Wagner.Since 2019, he has been studying at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin under the guidance of Esko Laine, the principal double bassist of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Benedek has performed at numerous prestigious festivals and concerts, including Kaposfest, the Kronberg Academy, the Verbier Festival, and Krzyżowa Music. He has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Christian Tetzlaff, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Dénes Várjon, Paavo Järvi, Daniel Harding, Frankl Péter and the Apollon Musagète Quartett. As a soloist, he has delivered notable performances, including Bruch's Kol Nidrei with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic in 2021 and the premiere of a new piece by György Kurtág.
His artistic philosophy posits that the double bass is not merely an accompanying instrument but also a lyrical and virtuosic solo instrument. In this spirit, he creates transcriptions of works by composers such as Schumann, Mahler, and Bloch to showcase the instrument's versatility. One of his significant chamber music partners is pianist Gorka Plada, with whom he has performed extensively across Europe.
His accolades include first prize at the Dittersdorf International Double Bass Competition (2015), the Fischer Annie Performing Arts Scholarship (2018, 2019), and the Junior Prima Award, which he received in 2021.
