The Budapest Ragtime Band was founded in 1980 by former students of the Franz Liszt Music Academy of Budapest. The high standard and creativity of their performances have made them one of the most prestigious jazz bands in Hungary in the last decades. The repertoire of the ensemble includes pieces of traditional ragtime and classical music, swing melodies, Dixieland music, and instrumental solos as well. Besides nurturing the traditions of ragtime music they are also performing pieces of other traditional American genres. The unique and extraordinary shows of the very popular band of Spike Jones gave them the idea to prepare and play humorous adaptations, and parodies of classical music pieces like Strauss’ Blue Danube Waltz, Khachaturian’s Sword Dance, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances and the Monti Csardas to name a few.
The Band usually gives more than 100 concerts per year both in Hungary and in abroad as well. Previously they have performed at the Great Hall of the Berlin Philharmony, made tours in England, in the United States, in the Canary Islands, and played in festivals and jazz clubs in Germany, Switzerland, Poland and Italy. The Band has played with such magnificent artists like Dave Brubeck, Chris Barber, Clark Terry, John Scofield, or Johnny Griffin. They have recorded eleven LPs and CDs, and are appearing regularly in entertainment programs of American, German, and of course, Hungarian TV channels. The Band consists of eight instrumental musicians and one singer.
